Massachusetts Art Educators Association - Statewide K-12 Student Exhbition

Students, grades K through 12, from across Massachusetts have been selected to have their artwork displayed at the State Transportation Building,10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA as part of the 2019 Statewide Youth Art Month Exhibit.  

The Boston exhibit is the only statewide K-12 exhibit in Massachusetts with work from private and public schools.

The show will be on display and open to the public weekdays 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. from February 11 through March 27, 2019.

The exhibit is closed weekends and Presidents Day, Monday, Feb. 18, 2019). Admission is free. Parking is available in the building for a fee.
This exhibit, sponsored by the Massachusetts Art Education Association (MAEA), is part of Youth Art Month (YAM), a national celebration endorsed by the Council for Art Education and the National Art Education Association (NAEA). This yearly celebration is held during March and emphasizes the value of art education for all children and encourages support for quality art programs in schools. This year’s Youth Art Month theme is Your Art, Your Story.

Bell Organic Garden Celebration

2018 Bell Organic Garden Celebration!

Bell art students created Japanese Carp Windsocks to celebrate the 1st annual Bell Organic Garden fundraiser celebration.

“Koinobori, meaning "carp streamer" in Japanese, are carp-shaped windsocks traditionally flown in Japan to celebrate a traditional calendar event which is now designated a national holiday; Children’s Day.

Children's Day takes place on May 5, landscapes across Japan are decorated with koinobori from April to early May, in honor of children for a good future and in the hope that they will grow up healthy and strong.”

1st Graders Study the Art of Van Gogh

Bell School 1st Grader recently completed a unit on the works of Vincent Van Gogh. This is one of my favorite projects during the school year. The kids have the opportunity to study the life of this amazing artist. One of our favorite books is "Getting to Know - Van Gogh". 

A little interesting story about the Vincent Van Gogh Sunflowers that I found on the web Although I've read about his story a number of times I thought this was a great way share with children Van Gogh's motivation for these particular paintings... It was August. Vincent didn't have any friends in Arles and was very lonely. He decided to invite a fellow artist, Paul Gauguin, to come and stay with him so they could paint together. Vincent wanted his friend Paul to feel welcome, and he wanted to impress him with his skill as a painter. So he created four sunflower still-lifes to decorate the walls of Paul’s bedroom. Paul Gauguin wasn't very fond of the sunflower paintings and immediately removed them from the wall of his room. Little did he know that a hundred years later one of Vincent’s sunflower paintings set a record for the most expensive painting in the world...

The project included sketches of flower pots and large flowers. Students used white glue to outline their sketches. When the glue was dried. They created an impressionistic drawing style using bright mix of oil pastels in a quick short stroke. Similar to the quick painting style of the impressionists and Van Gogh.

 

1st Grade Paper Mache - Owl Moon

Teaching the process of paper mache is always an interesting undertaking in any elementary school art classroom. My first couple of years of teaching I tried various paper mache projects but it was always a huge undertaking with 25 kids in a class. After many years have finally come to embrace the process. This year I started paper mache with my 1st grade classes. I combined this project with a PTO enrichment program on Birds of Prey. The kids saw owls first hand during the presentation. Making a connection with live owls their sculptural art was a great experience. And paper mache is a wonderful medium to address many of the elements and principles of art and design.

• The elements are: line, shape, color, texture, space, and form. 
• The principles include: pattern, balance, contrast, unity, variety, rhythm, movement, and emphasis. 

Our owls were created from recycled materials, acrylic paint, and model magic. Donated newspaper, paper towels, aluminum foil and black pins make up the recycled elements. Students use painted paper for feathers to create texture and depth. Here are some of our owls from my first two classes that completed their owls. I just love these.

Roy G. Biv - 1st Grade Study in Color Theory

A First Grade Lesson in the rainbow order of color hues.

A rainbow spans a spectrum of colors which the human eye translates to color vision. In the acronym Roy G. BiV, the colors are arranged in a rainbow order of decreasing wavelengths, beginning with red and ending in violet. The kindergarteners develop "Roy" with painted Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue and Violet tempera colors. The painted sheets are cut to construct "Roy's" hair and bowtie.

Visual Arts In Review- By Mrs. Nohelty

Throughout the course of the school year, every class from Kindergarten to Third grade meets once a week for 45 minutes in the art classroom. Bell Students will have art for approximately 12 art classes each grading period.

The program is designed to provide an enriching Fine Art experience for every student regardless of their skill-level, talent, or aptitude. All students have the opportunity to create and participate in an individualized yet cooperative artistic environment. 

In the Bell Elementary art program we focus on creativity and expression of individual artistic accomplishment. The students, regardless of age, are encouraged to engage in the visual arts while working within the structure and expectations of the Marblehead Public School Fine Arts Curriculum, and the Massachusetts State Visual Arts Educational Frameworks. Art lessons within the Bell School program are developed with a strong emphasis age appropriate artistic skills while integrating the theories of Elements and Principals around Art and Design.  Students are graded according to their willingness to participate, age appropriate visual art skill sets and classroom behavior.

for the Bell School Fine Arts Night with her mom rather than going to the beach. We are almost ready to go. The kids work looks great. As soon as school is out I owe her a lobster roll and day at Good Harbor Beach!

Bell School 2013 Winter Musical - Oceans of Fun

Bell Elementary School Presents….

“Oceans of Fun” - The 2013 Winter Musical

On January 15 and 16, at the Marblehead High School, the second and third grade students from Bell Elementary School performed the children’s musical “Oceans of Fun” written by Jill and Michael Gallina.  Students sang through educational songs about the various sea creatures that live in the ocean, which include: Jellyfish, Scallops, Oysters and Clams, Sharks, Octopi, Sea Turtles and Lobsters.  Students were dressed in hand painted head pieces that each performer  individually created and brightly colored tee-shirts silk screened with artwork of sea creatures each child designed specifically for the show shirts.  Original watercolor art painted by the 2nd grade students was also projected behind the performers throughout the show.  Each class was featured in a specific choreographed dance in the front of the stage, depending on their sea creature, as the others sang on the risers.  The students exhibited excellent singing, movement, artistry and concert etiquette.
